MeSH and Substance terms are not specific to biomaterials. Therefore, the BIOMATDB multidisciplinary team of experts developed their own set of guidelines to define which labels should be used and how to curate the metadata. These labels, now called the BIOMATDB Project Labels, were subsequently classified into broader, more intuitive categories, such as Materials and Material Composition, Model System, Outcomes and Toxicity, Bioactive Compounds, and Manufactured Product. These categories are clear and easy to navigate for the biomaterials community, and are also used in the database frontend as filter options for advanced searches.
A visual representation of the MeSH and Substances labels tree is presented below. This includes the main categories created and used to annotate the data at the backend and create a range of functionalities in the frontend.
